2010 is the 120th Anniversary of the Birth of Dame Agatha Christie
Born in Torquay in 1890, the famous novelist is celebrated
throughout the English Riviera. Many of our day trips go to places she visited and enjoyed herself and will allow you to explore her world
Torquay, as her birthplace and home for many years, has much to see and do that is Dame related. The Agatha Christie Mile starts at the Grand Hotel and travels along the front to the Imperial Hotel at the other side of the bay. She spent the honeymoon of her first marriage at the Grand Hotel in 1914, before seeing her new husband off to France and to fight.
In Princess Gardens you can see bust of Agatha Christie, sculpted by Dutch sculptor Carol Van Den Boom-Cairns. You can also visit the Pavillion where Agatha would have enjoyed many concerts.
You'll next pass the Torquay Museum which is hosting an Agatha Christie Exhibition, inlcuding an image of her enjoying roller-skating on the pier with her friends. Agatha Christies father managed the original collection in this museum
At the end of the mile is the Imperial Hotel, where Agatha would have enjoyed many social occasions and dances
Dame Agatha Christie also enjoyed visiting the surrounding countryside in her free time. She is known to have visited Cockington Village on a number of occasions, and you can follow in her hoof prints when you take a horse and carriage ride through the hidden gardens of the Cockington Court
The final place you can visit in this celebratory year is her former home of the Greenways Estate. This can be reached by ferry from either Dartmouth or Torquay and offers a great day out. Donated to the National Trust by her family in 1999, the house has only been opened to the public in recent years and contains many family treasures. Entrance for National Trust Members is free.
